My Wanderlust Explained
Yes, this is my back. This photo was taken moments after my tattoo was completed.
My love for the world and exploring it began at a VERY young age. As far back as I can remember, I can recall laying on my dads lap watching National Geographic, BBC and other travel/nature shows with him. I was hooked instantly!
Most kids “zone out” to cartoons for hours, not me. I would watch shows about the diverse wildlife in Africa, marine life around the world, remote tribes in the amazon or just flip through the pages of his national geographic subscriptions before I could even read. My dad has always had a MAJOR case of wanderlust so I guess you can say that “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” Which by the way, I have passed the “travel bug” on to my own child as well. 😉 She would rather sleep in a hotel, a tent or a vacation home over our own home any day of the week! ha ha
My mother also had a desire to explore new places, though her desires were mostly contained to warmer, more tropical climates such as Mexico and Hawaii. 🙂 She absolutely LOVED the ocean and both of my parents love(d) food(again, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree) so she and my father always made sure to take road-trips to the coast every chance they got to spend time at the beach and eat fresh, delicious sea food. Lucky, living in California they “took off” often. I am sure my dad, sister and I could have EASILY talked my mom into visiting more “wild” locations but unfortunately she passed away nearly 8 years ago. The world is less one AMAZING woman because she is gone.
Despite my mothers terminal illness, my sister and I never had a shortage of trips growing up. Whether we were going to Disneyland, Monterey, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Yosemite, Hawaii, or Mexico(for fun or on missions trips) we were ALWAYS busy traveling and doing things as a family!
Our travels were not always selfish either, I vividly remember going to Mexico with bags of clothes and shoes we no longer used and visiting small villages with my dad to give to the less fortunate. We would buy bags of rice and beans upon arrival and just go from village to village bringing essential supplies and love. The great example my parents lived before us, lead me to have a deep desire to begin doing missions trips. I did several trips with a few organizations such as Team Extreme, YWAM & an independent Christian Jewish evangelical organization which also partnered with several other organizations such as local churches and Samaritans purse then I basically ran out of money. We were required to raise our own support and frankly I did not have many people wanting to support what I was doing. My parents gave what they could, my best friend helped out, I also worked in between trips but it just wasn’t enough to pursue my dream of traveling the world, bringing hope, love and physical relief to those who need it. My international travel journey’s ended for a while.
Now, my goal is to teach our daughter about the world by taking her to it!!! To instill in her a passion to make the world a better place one act of kindness or service at a time. To take care of our planet because it is the only one we have. To learn about different places and cultures one person, one animal, one meal, one experience at a time and to challenge herself to grow into the person she was created to be one adventure at a time. We truly live in a World Worth Wandering! We love to wander it and I hope you are inspired to go out and wander it too!
